What does an Ultrasound Health Check consist of & what can it detect?
The test is a combination of 3 scans:
1. Abdomen. We examine the Liver, Gallbladder, Spleen, Pancreas, Aorta, Bile Ducts & Portal vein.
2. Renal Tract. We check your Kidneys & Adrenal glands, Urinary Bladder (full & empty to assess function) & in the case of men, we measure the size of your Prostate gland.
3. Carotid Arteries assessment. These are the vessels that supply blood to your brain. We check for any narrowed or blocked arteries.
Some of the pathologies an Abdominal Ultrasound examination may find include:

Gallstones, Gallbladder polyps & cholecystitis (inflammation).

Pancreatitis & some Pancreatic cancers.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms.

Liver pathologies, including some cancers, cysts, cirrhosis & enlargement.

Splenic tumours & Spleen enlargement.

Bile Duct obstruction.
A Renal Tract Ultrasound can identify:

Kidney stones, cysts, some cancers & renal obstruction.

Some Bladder cancers, stones & inflammation.

Enlargement of the Prostate gland (in men).

Assess Bladder function by measuring it's capacity both full & empty.
For Carotid Arteries assessment, Ultrasound can:

Measure the speed & direction of blood flow in the Carotid Arteries.

Assess for the presence & level of Carotid Artery stenosis (vessel narrowing).

Characterisation of Carotid Artery plaque deposits & assessment of plaque stability.

Provide a risk assessment for certain types of strokes & Transient Ischaemic Attacks (TIA’s).

A recent meta-analysis of 22 articles found that the measurement of intima-media thickness was an accurate diagnostic tool, in the asseeement for Coronary Artetry Disease*. This is one of the many measurements that we perform during your Carotid Artery examination.
